Hostile Housing Market to be Mitigated through OpenHouse
New Madison based nonprofit working to close gap between tenants and landlords.
MADISON, Wis. April 25, 2025– New non-profit OpenHouse is launching its app in May 2025. OpenHouse will empower tenants and small landlords to come together to mitigate the hostile housing crisis. Through highlighting transparency and accessibility to information, OpenHouse will curate a community that fosters an honest housing market.
Founded by a team of UW-Madison undergraduates, OpenHouse aims to increase the accessibility of safe and affordable housing in Madison. Relentless rent hikes, disjointed searching and unethical landlords can push tenants into debt, or even out of Madison.
OpenHouse works through a matching system that shows users units that are curated to their needs, and shows tenants potential roommates based on their preferences. Landlords are given free advertising for their units, with potential to pay for a verification of amenities.
“Big landlords have long disregarded the needs of tenants, whether for profit or convenience. We know that tenants need help to find ethical landlords, which is why we are creating safeguards to ensure transparency and verification of our landlords claims. At OpenHouse we are striving towards a transparent and accessible housing search for students and young adults,” Bethany Stacey, OpenHouse CEO.
Through curating a more robust, interactive and transparent culture surrounding housing OpenHouse aims to bridge the gap between tenants and landlords. Investors and landlords alike can benefit from the accessible and safe nature of OpenHouse. As a non-profit organization, it is clear that OpenHouse is a transparent and honest platform to use.
“The potential to work with OpenHouse is incredibly promising. I have had years where ⅓ of my units are unoccupied because I dont no have the same manpower of these huge conglomerate lessors. Family ran housing does not have the same profit driven mindset and it is great to see such an effort to close that gap,” John Doe, small Madison landlord.
OpenHouse was founded in March of 2025 to give students and young adults autonomy over their housing situation. By placing more power in the hands of tenants and pushing landlords to be more ethical, OpenHouse will level the playing field for tenants.
